DIY Sweater Mittens!

Running out of ideas for Christmas presents or running on a budget? This cute DIY mittens idea is perfect for any girl on your list. All you need is a sweater you no longer wear and some sewing skills!

What you need:

  • Sweater
  • Paper
  • Pen
  • Scissors
  • Needle & Thread

What to do:

  • First, place your hand on top of two pieces of computer paper how it would go into a mitten. (four fingers laying together and thumb slightly out to the side)

  • Second, trace your hand generously, leaving about a half inch extra space.
  • Third, cut out your tracing (this should give you two cut outs of your mitten from the two pieces of paper)
  • Fourth, lay the sweater out flat and place the tracings on the sweater side by side and cut out (you should get four cut outs, two from the front of the sweater and two from the back)

  • Fifth, sew two pieces together along the edges, leaving the bottom open for the hand to enter
  • Sixth, flip inside out so the pen marks and stitching are not showing!
  • Seventh (optional) add a layer of fur trim around the wrists!

Protect Yourself W/ a Self Defense Course

In today’s day it is not a bad idea to drop a few dollars on improving your safety. We may think we know how to protect ourselves but there is always room for improvement. As for me, I am a small girl who cannot do a pull up. I’m fit for the most part but I don’t have the skills to take down someone coming after me. My goal is to help persuade you to at least THINK about learning more. If you don’t want to spend money on a course, pick up some articles to read and practice some skills on your own. This is a great idea for both men and women!

  1. Learning Something New

We like to think we know everything but it’s not even close. It’s the same as watching a documentary, learning new things increases your awareness and it makes you more confident.

2. Safety

This is the biggest one. Everyone wants to feel safe and secure but we don’t always feel that way. Therefore learning techniques of what to do when your safety is in danger can help ease your mind. This is especially true for those with anxiety or trouble acting on impulse. The feeling of safety is an important aspect of life.

3. Increased Self Confidence

If you’ve ever been in a public place and got lost from your friends or family for a moment, a panic may come accross you from being in an unfamiliar place alone. If you know self defense techniques, you can be confident that you can take care of yourself and focus on finding the people that wandered from you.

4. Tone That Body

Self Defense isn’t easy! It takes hard work and dedication. Not only do you need to be mentally prepared but physically prepared also. As I said earlier, I can barely do a pull up. Therefore my arm strength is weak. Therefore in my case, they would use the advtange of a having a strong lower body by teaching techniques based on the lower body. And slowly build working on the upper body.

5. Self-Discipline

Everyone has tried to start a healthy habit and gave up because it was either time consuming or kept you from doing something you would rather do. But, if you stick with something like self defense, it builds your self discipline to be able to stick to healthy habits.

6. Protect Others

Most of us have loved ones that we worry about too. So not only are we assisting our safety but we are assisting theirs too! Being able to protect yourself and others can take a huge weight off of your shoulders.

7. Social!

Think of the awesome people you will meet in these classes. They want to help you with all the above aspects and that is dedication. It could bring lifelong friendships. Most likely other people like you will be in those classes wanting to get the same things out of it.

If anything, really think of these 6 reasons. There are NO downfalls to becoming more aware in self defense. In future blogs we will provide you further information on available self defense programs!

Women & Education 🎓

Let’s all take a moment to appreciate that right now we have more women than men enrolling in college. In fact, as of 2012, women enrolling in college is 10% more than men! LETS GO GIRLS, we may truly run the world as Beyonce once said. As most of you know, Hillary Clinton became the first woman to run to be president of the United States. Whether or not you supported her, you can still appreciate that she was strong and willing to take on that role. Speaking of Hillary,

**The U.S. Ranks 97th  of 187 Countries on Women’s Legislative Representation**

Women are more than half of the US’ population but only 19% of House Reps are women. That doesn’t seem like a lot but we are growing.

But let’s get back to education. With more women enrolling in college, they are also seeking more careers that men dominated.

**Lawyers: 12.4% were Women in 1980, 36% are women today.**

How cool is that? When you watch lawyer or criminal justice shows…most have a sassy female lead. Its great and entertaining. But its also happening in real life! We still have some way to go though…36/64 is not 50/50. We’re working on it though!

**Women now earning degrees in bioscience about EQUAL men**

YES! Our attention to detail and the finite things in education is needed in this field!

But here is a bummer…

**In 2016, women earned 81.8% of what men earned on a weekly basis**

It’s better than it used to be but this is just simply not OK. We have the SAME education and dedication. On the positive side, a lot of people are fighting for equality in pay and we haven’t given up quite yet. Let’s not be too negative.

We just have to keep educating and reminding one another of the amazing people we are. SafetyGirl is proud of you and the work you do everyday.

NAWIC: National Assoc. of Women in Construction

Image result for women in construction

Talk about girl power…this organization needs some recognition! The NAWIC was founded in 1953 by sixteen construction workers who just happened to be women. They understood that the amount of women in the construction business was declining, so why not make it special club and recognize more strong women. Their core purpose is to “enhance the success of women in the construction industry.” It is basically a support network. They give their participants really cool opportunities such as professional development, education, networking, leadership training, and public service.

If you become a member, you can be nominated for special rewards such as a lifetime achievement award for being active in this special group, member of the year award and future leader of the year. They then have an annual meeting every year to announce the winners.

There is a code of professionalism you must follow such as believing in their core values: belief in yourself as a woman, perseverance and daring to move into new horizons. That doesn’t seem so bad. It actually seems refreshing to be appreciated so much by such a great organization.

There are international affiliates, also. the NAWIC has connections with Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the UK. All of these countries and places around the world also have their own NAWIC program.

You can find a chapter near you by simply searching your zip code on the site. For example we searched chapters near us in New Stanton, PA and there is one in Pittsburgh, PA!
